Twickenham Guide | Eating in Twickenham | Drinking in Twickenham

My pick of the crop (updated March 2008).

***Please note that I cannot guarantee that the menus are up-to-date.***

Amin's Curry - 98, Heath Road - Tel: 020 8892 1100
Often rated as the best Curry House in the area. Mr Miah started his original restaurant (the Rawalpindi) in 1962 and passed the business over to his son, Amin. Some years ago they moved down the road to a small and basic premises. I recommend the Dansaks and the Chicken Pathia Puri. The Jalfrezi has a good kick. The Lassis are mind-blowing - a real treat. Amin's menu #1 / Amin's menu #2.

Dominos - 190, Stanley Road, Teddington - Tel: 020 8977 7722
Decent Pizza delivered locally.

Jun Ming - 34, Heath Road - Tel: 020 8892 3105
Had some nice meals here in the past. Eat as much as you like for £15.45. They sell Tsing Tao Chinese beer, Irish Coffees and Maotai liqueur at a 106 proof. It will blow your head off. Jun Ming menu #1 / Jun Ming menu #2.

Karmarama Café - Orleans House Gallery
Fascinating place and very pleasant surroundings. You have a choice of two galleries to peruse in beautiful woodland by the Thames. Not far from the Marble Hill Café two entries below. Illy coffee and light snacks carefully prepared. It's worth going just to check the place out. Note it opens at around 11 and the galleries open at around 1 or 2 (see link for opening times).

Loch Fyne Restaurant - 175, Hampton Road - Tel: 020 8404 6686
Excellent fish and seafood on the Twickenham/Hanworth border. Another expensive place and another good website.

Marble Hill Café - Marble Hill Park
Closed on Mondays. Opens at 10 in the morning. Situated on the corner of the beautiful Coach House in the park. Try the scrambled egg on toast. Good coffee. Reasonable (London) prices.

Merits - Egerton Road - Tel: 020 8607 8164
One of the best kept secrets in Twickenham. Merits is a training restaurant based at the sixth form college in Egerton Road - definitely off the beaten track. Staff are mostly nervous looking 16-19 year-olds (under supervision) but the whole enterprise is taken in earnest. Serious menus at ridiculous prices. The current lunch menu is £7.00 for three courses. The food is generally excellent. The special evening functions they throw are a must.

Miss Siam - 40, York Street - Tel: 020 8286 8814
Oustanding Thai cuisine on York street. Good quality ingredients not overcooked. The chef appears to take his job very seriously. Has a reputation for being expensive but at the moment you can get a stonking takeaway for £8.70 (Penang curry and coconut rice). It's worth it. The web site is beautiful in its simplicity. The link to the menu is on the right.

Norma's Diner - 25, York Street - Tel: 020 8892 4468
English Breakfasts right in the middle of Twickenham. Pretty good too.

Osteria Pulcinella - 36, Church Street - Tel: 020 8892 5854
Just outstanding. Everything about this place is brilliant. Very good Italian fare. Warm and cosy mediterranean decor throughout. Good selection of wine and Italian beer. Impressive selection of brandies, ports and liqueurs to finish the meal. Best restaurant in Twickenham.

Ozon Oriental - 33-35, London Road - Tel: 020 8891 3611/5046
High quality oriental food and friendly, professional service. I'm a fan of the Ozon Chicken with fiery dried red chillies. The laksa soup noodle is a good deal for £6, pretty much a full meal. Ozon menu #1 / Ozon menu #2 / Ozon menu #3 / Ozon menu #4. You pay for what you get. It's the best in town.

Pret A Manger - Richmond - Tel: 020 7932 5237
Top quality sandwiches delivered locally. But owned by MacDonald's.

Raefils - 34, Church Street - Tel: 020 8892 6366
About 15 ago years this place kicked of a little culinary revolution in Twickenham by offering authentic French cuisine in a lovely setting for silly prices. The Plat Du Jour menu was a legend; three brilliant courses for about £8.50. There was no competition and it became a favourite venue for many. Still held in high regard, but finding it hard now to match those heady days.

Sagar - 27, York Street - Tel: 020 8744 3868
Opened April 2006. South Indian cuisine and entirely vegetarian. Notable for the amazing lunch boxes - £3.25 for two curries, rice, bread, small raita and salad. The eat-in lunch is around £5 and will blow you out. A real bargain and good food to boot. Sagar menu #1 / Sagar menu #2.

Sheesh Mahal - 19-21, London Road - Tel: 020 8892 5471/3303
Another good Curry House - recently renovated to the 'new-wave' style. The vindaloos and fals here are the best in the area (I think). The dansaks are nice too. Good value. This place has a dedicated following.

Zizzis - King Street - Tel: 020 8538 9024
Despite being a chain (and having a name which would raise a few French eyebrows!) the atmosphere is good, the staff are friendly and professional and the food is consistently excellent, whatever the time of day or week. If good mediterranean food (and wine) is what you are after - head here. One small criticism - no liqueur coffee! Small beer though, I love this place.
